Host Jim Falk: In this discussion we talk about sanctions, now a favored tool for the United States to use against adversaries such as Russia, Iran, North Korea and many other countries and individuals. Joining us from the American Enterprise Institute is Leon Aron. Born in Moscow, Aron came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1978.. His latest book, ?Riding the Tiger: Vladimir Putin?s Russia and the Uses of War?. Bruce Jentleson, PhD Duke University where he a professor of Public Policy. He is the author of ?Sanctions: What Everyone Needs to Know.? Sanctions are easy to apply but hard to remove and frequently the result is opposite to the intent and may even harden positions. While certainly preferable to a kinetic conflict, sanctions have a human cost, often leading to deaths of those who bear no responsibility for the cause of the sanction. We hope that this discussion provided you with a better understanding and most importantly different perspectives of what is frequently described as a ?shadow? weapon.
