The Jewels: The Divas of DC Doo-Wop highlights the musical journey of the singing group, The Jewels. Proclaimed as jewel of the Nation's Capitol, the story describe their challenges as talented teenage girls in the 1960s with dreams of making hit records. Protoges of guitarist Bo Diddley, the teenage girls recorded their first tunes at Chess Records in Chicago. With changes in personnel and name changes, the group went from experiencing the harsh realities of the recording industry to basking in the success of a national hit recording. The Jewel's 1964 hit "Opportunity" peaked at number 18 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks. During a week's stint at the world famous Apollo, their life would change forever with a surprise visit by the "Godfather of Soul", James Brown. Impressed with their live performance, he offered the group a chance to perform with the famous James Brown Revue. What started out as a tour of three theater dates ended up with the Jewels touring with James Brown for a year and becoming his first female background singers. From the Howard Theater in Washington,DC to The Apollo Theaterin New York, the Jewels celebrate over 50 years in show business with their soulful harmonies and powerhouse performance
