Follow renowned artist Dale Chihuly as he tests his resolve and challenges his team to push the glass medium to its physical limits. CHIHULY: ROLL THE DICE documents the master artist's exhaustive, five-year process to realize "Rotolo," a series of large-scale pedestal sculptures, and his working relationship with trusted long-time gaffer, James Mongrain. The "Rotolo" series began in 2013 when Chihuly had the idea of working with clear glass coils. Mongrain remembers receiving a series of excited voice messages from Chihuly, where he outlined his new idea: "I'm thinking about these coils, maybe coming off a vessel. I don't know exactly what we'll do. I just know I want them to be big - as big as we can." That began a four-year exploration of technical and sculptural possibilities.

CHIHULY OUTSIDE covers nearly half a century of Dale Chihuly's epic outdoor installations. The film chronicles Chihuly's first experiments with floating glass on water and using ice and neon, his early work at Art Park in Upstate New York and his decade-long exploration of large-scale installations at 12 of the world's preeminent botanic gardens and conservatories. Among many highlights, the hour-long documentary traces the development of Mille Fiori, a 56-foot "garden of glass" first exhibited in 2008 at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, and his most recent work, Chihuly Garden and Glass, which opened May 2012 at the foot of Seattle's iconic Space Needle. CHIHULY OUTSIDE completes a trilogy of films exploring Chihuly's work, which began in 2008 with Chihuly in the Hotshop and continued with 2010's Chihuly Fire & Light.

When Homo sapiens arrived in Australia, they were - for the first time - truly alone, surrounded by wildly different flora and fauna. How did they survive and populate a continent? There is a close cultural and genetic link between the First Australians and modern-day Aborigines -- the ancient and modern story intersect here as nowhere else in the world. The secret to this continuity is diversity. Intuitively, they found the right balance between being separate and connected.
When Homo sapiens turned up in prehistoric Europe, they ran into the Neanderthals. The two types of human were similar enough to interbreed - and they were just as capable at making artifacts. But as more Homo sapiens moved into Europe, there was an explosion of art and symbolic thought. The balance of power had shifted and Neanderthals were overwhelmed. Ever since, we've had Europe and the rest of the world to ourselves.
