Since Julia Alvarez, the author of How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents, and In the Time of the Butterflies moved to Vermont a dozen years ago, she has produced an impressive repertoire of work...two books of poetry, four award winning novels, a book of essays and most recently, a children's book and three books for young readers. Alvarez spent her childhood in the Dominican Republic, but when she was ten, her family moved to New York city to flee a repressive regime. Forced to adapt to a new culture and language, Alvarez found solace in books, in writing, in listening to and telling stories. She became serious about writing in college, received a BA from Middlebury College and went on to earn an MFA from Syracuse University. Join host Fran Stoddard iin a conversation about the craft of writing, coffee, cultural identity and la familia with award winning writer and Middlebury professor Julia Alvarez.
