Samantha kicks off her visit to the Garden State in Cape May, the only US city designated as a National Historic Landmark. In the early 1850's, American Abolitionist Harriet Tubman found refuge in Cape May, where she planned the underground railroad with various abolitionists. At the newly opened Harriet Tubman Museum, Samantha discovers Tubman's connection to New Jersey and how Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Rooted in sustainable practices and a shared sense of community, Samantha discovers Beach Plum Farm, a 62-acre working farm dedicated to the timeless farming heritage of the Garden State. At the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, Samantha talks with a conservationist about the ground-breaking research that the Institute is doing to preserve salt marshes and their focus on educating the public about the importance of salt marshes and their impact on many eco-systems. New Jersey played a major role in the American Revolutionary War, where the war was fought for three of the six years. At Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Samantha talks with Historian Dr. David Martin about the longest single day battle of the war that took place at this historic site that involved General George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Samantha then visits the Source Farmhouse Brewery and talks with Founder Phil Petracca about the Brewery's socially responsible to charities, inclusion and their focus to bring communities together while sharing farm-to-glass brews that are being produced using entirely local-sourced ingredients. Heading to Asbury Park, Samantha visits the legendary music venue, The Stone Pony, and meets musician Southside Johnny, who shares stories about the early days of Asbury Park, Bruce Springsteen and performing at the Pony. Just down the road at the Transparent Clinch Gallery, Samantha talks with Photographer Danny Clinch about being behind the lens and capturing some of rock n rolls' greatest artists of all time. Closing out the trip, Danny is joined by Renee Maskin for live performance in the gallery.
Every day we make decisions. Some are simple - Rocky Road or Cherry Garcia, bus or walk, umbrella or not. Some decisions are considerably more complex - accept or reject a proposal of marriage, live where you are or move. And some decisions change the world. In this program, Burt takes viewers to Paris, the Basque country of Spain, San Francisco, California, Washington, D.C. and New York City to research the decisions that resulted in the Atomic Bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, a painting that showed the world that Franco and Hitler had teamed-up to murder the people of Guernica, and how, in the middle of the San Francisco earthquake, the Bank of America got started. Burt also talks to Bob Dilenschneider, a communications expert, about how you can make your most effective decisions.

Where a seed comes from - and how it was grown - can play a big role in how we source and grow our food crops and ornamental plants in our future. Not all seeds are created equal, nor should we be treating them as if they are. These days, more gardeners than ever are growing their own food. The seeds they choose to purchase and plant can impact a lot more than their own backyard garden.

Kelly introduces the season by sitting down with Dr. Atul Gawande, Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, and Dr. Dani Dumitriu to discuss mental health and well-being in America today. They speak on three principal factors that play a role in shaping our wellness: nature (our genetics), nurture (the environment we're raised in), and choice (healthy behaviors we do or don't engage in on a regular basis). Our experts add an important caveat that our choices occur within a context. And that context is constantly changing, evolving and shaping our choices, whether we're aware of it or not.
Kelly has a conversation with Dr. Dima Amso, professor of psychology at Columbia University, about how the quality of nurture we receive as children influences our well-being in the long term. Dr. Amso, whose research examines the human brain and cognitive development, gives her take on the challenges of social media, how to be a better consumer of science journalism, and what we can do as society to support childhood development at school and at home. She also shares how what she has learned in the lab influences her values and priorities as a parent.

Story in the Public Square is a weekly, public affairs show designed to study, celebrate, and tell stories that matter. The show is inspired by the power of stories to shape public understanding of important issues. For example, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," shined a crucial light on the violence and inhumanity of American slavery, fueled the abolition movement, and inspired Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting the author, to say "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. From a great novel to a film, a song, or even a Tweet, stories still very much impact the way the American public looks at issues. Our show turns a critical eye to these stories and their tellers.
