Louisiana: The State We're In

LATEST IN THE LOUISIANA GOVERNOR'S RACE Businessman Eddie Rispone's decision to launch a TV ad this week criticizing fellow Republican Rep. Ralph Abraham in the governor's race has drawn backlash from some Republicans who call it the wrong strategy to defeat the Democratic incumbent, Governor John Bel Edwards. They worry about a repeat of the GOP infighting that helped Edwards win in 2015. Andre' Moreau talks with two of the state's top political reporters about the strategy and the governor's race in general, now less than a month from the October 12 primary election. INSURANCE COMMISSIONER RACE HEATS UP The insurance commissioner's race heated up this week with the two candidates squaring off at the Baton Rouge Press Club. Natasha Williams reports on the forum featuring the incumbent, Jim Donelon and Baton Rouge real estate executive Tim Temple, both Republicans. Donelon has held the job since 2006 and cites his experience, while Temple says the state's insurance climate has greatly declined under Donelon. REMEMBERING COKIE ROBERTS Cited as one of the fifty greatest women in the history of broadcasting by the American Women in Radio and Television, we take a look back at the life news journalist and author Cokie Roberts. Roberts passed away this week at the age of 75 after battling breast cancer. Born in New Orleans, Roberts had a front row view of Louisiana and American politics. She was the daughter of Louisiana's long-time congresswoman, Lindy Boggs, and congressman Hale Boggs. LIFE AFTER THE MILITARY Life after a career in the military can be difficult for some, but we'll tell you about NextOp Veterans and their efforts to help make the post-military transition less stressful by working hand-in-hand with businesses in Louisiana's manufacturing, construction, and energy sectors.
