Advocates, tribal leaders and artists are among those continuing to raise awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous people in Alaska. They want to make sure their loved ones are remembered. They're also continuing to seek justice for those who've gone missing and murdered. When it comes to wellness, Alaska Native people are using their language, culture and the land to help heal from trauma. Elders, young people, community leaders, advocates and others, are helping communities across the state heal from the impacts of boarding schools, violence against women and substance use. The 30-minute documentary "Alaska Justice: Let it be known that we heal each other, " follows Alaska Native people in their efforts to raise awareness of MMIP and heal from trauma.
The Northern Arapaho Reentry program is helping people return home from out-of-state federal prisons and state incarceration to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. The program is voluntary and open to tribal citizens enrolled in one of the two tribes of the Wind River Reservation, the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone. It is also open to tribal descendants of the two tribes or other Native American tribal members. Many people in the program are more determined now to stay out of the justice system with the program's assistance. The reentry program is administered by former Northern Arapaho Tribal attorney and judge Terri Smith, who went through a public downfall after being indicted on drug charges. Smith connects on a personal level with her clients, helping them look for jobs and find services as they return home to the vast reservation.
In Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde treatment and recovery services are making strides in tackling the opioid crisis both in the tribal community and in neighboring towns and cities. Taking care of the health and wellness of community members is a key tribal value, and the tribe has created its own programs to address the needs of the community. The state, like many other states in the U.S., has been hit by the opioid crisis, including the misuse of prescription and illicit drugs. Tribal programs are addressing stigma around opioid use disorder. Great Circle is the first tribally owned opioid treatment program in the state. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde also provide recovery and transitional housing services.
