Mr. Polaroid

Long before the iPhone, another inventive device allowed everyone to instantly chronicle their lives - the Polaroid camera. The product, and the company's unique culture, would launch not only instant photography mania but also become the model for today's Silicon Valley tech culture. It all began with the Polaroid Model 95, first offered for sale in the fall of 1948. Its revolutionary power to allow the photographer to see the picture then and there would change the country, then the world. Mr. Polaroid tells the little-known story of the man behind the camera, a Harvard dropout named Edwin Land. Over a half century ago, before the smartphone, Land was dreaming up "a camera that you would use as often as your pencil or your eyeglasses." He would also come to believe his company was "on its way to lead the world - perhaps even to save it." Hubris, technology, brilliance, and a billion photographs a year are all part of the rollicking Polaroid story.

Tanika, a 46-year-old network journalist in Atlanta, Georgia, was looking forward to starting a family after getting married. But her hope of becoming a mother faced an obstacle because she has noncancerous tumors in her uterus called uterine fibroids. According to the University of Michigan, African-American women are two to three times more likely than white women to have recurring fibroids or suffer from complications. In this episode, Tanika explains how she handled the struggle of living with uterine fibroids and how she refused to let these issues take away her dream of motherhood. Later, Medical Stories travels to Brighton, Michigan, where another couple are trying to overcome a medical condition that's preventing them from having children. Despite growing up with unusual symptoms, Sara wasn't diagnosed with endometriosis until she was in her thirties. It's a condition caused by tissue similar to the lining of the uterus growing outside the uterus. And Johns Hopkins Medicine claims up to half of all cases of infertility can be linked to the disease. Sara, now 39, and her husband, Brian, open up about what it was like dealing with a mysterious disease throughout their relationship, before revealing how their story wound up with an unexpected happy ending. This episode also features in-depth commentary from renowned experts Ayman Al-Hendy, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FACOG, CCRP, Professor (Tenure) Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Chicago Medicine, and Sawsan As-Sanie, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan.

The second part of this two-part documentary series begins with the potential demise of naval aviation, as many in the military establishment promote nuclear weapons and pronounce carrier aviation obsolete. Korea, and later Vietnam, offer a startling reminder of the utility of naval aviation, and undermine the post-World War II conviction that the U.S. will fight all of its wars with nuclear weapons. As the Cold War deepens, the installation of Soviet ballistic missiles in Cuba brings the nation to the brink of nuclear war. Another important function of naval aviation - reconnaissance - rallies world opinion and helps diffuse the crisis. Photographs of the Soviet missiles taken by low-flying naval aviators provide incontrovertible evidence of the Soviet Union's lying. Following the age of nuclear terror came a new low in Vietnam, where doubts about the military merge with racial animosities to undermine morale among naval aviators. The episode concludes by exploring the technological evolutions like GPS-guided weapons that continue to transform the field. Interviews and vivid archival footage from Afghanistan and Iraq highlights the new moral challenges of asymmetrical warfare today.

Two Wars: No Mail, Low Morale

Duration: 0:24:00

During World War II, a shortage of soldiers managing the postal service created a backlog of mail and packages that never made it to their intended destinations. Officials knew the undelivered mail was hurting morale but were unsure how to solve the problem. To address this issue, Mary McLeod Bethune, an educator and political activist, advocated for the enlistment of women of color in the Women's Army Corps. TWO WARS: NO MAIL, LOW MORALE tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (also known as the Six-Triple-Eight), a group of 824 women who served in the Women's Army Corps. Under the command of Major Charity Edna Adams, the Six-Triple-Eight created a card index system to efficiently process mail and completed numerous critical missions that contributed to the war effort. Despite their significant contributions, the battalion received little recognition and was disbanded upon return to the U.S. It took 50 years before their heroic efforts were properly acknowledged.

Injunuity

Injunuity is a collage of reflections on the Native American world, our shared past, our turbulent present, and our undiscovered future. From Columbus to the western expansion to tribal casinos, we are taught that the Native way, while at times glorious, is something of the past, something that needed to be replaced by a manifest destiny from across the ocean. But in a world increasingly short of real answers, it is time we looked to Native wisdom for guidance. It is time for some Injunuity. Injunuity is a mix of animation, music, and real thoughts from real people exploring our world from the Native American perspective. Every word spoken is verbatim, every thought and opinion is real, told in nine short pieces and covering such topics as language preservation, sacred sites, and the environment. But rather than simply revisit our history, the goal of Injunuity is to help define our future, to try and figure out the path that lies before us, to focus on where we are going as well as where we have been.

The story follows actual and created figures who were affected by Johann Sutter's exploitation methods to build his fortune-making empire at Sutter's Fort. The world-altering clash is brought to life through story, song, and dance.
