Tressie McMillan Cottom is a writer, researcher, and sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a public scholar and essayist, McMillan Cottom explores matters related to Black America, culture, politics, and economics for The New York Times and is the author of the books Thick: And Other Essays and Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy. She is also the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award.
