"The World's Toughest Row" is an extreme race featuring unassisted rowing boats that cross the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua. For a team of four Air Force veterans, this challenge was the ultimate test of body and mind, as well as an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for other vets experiencing mental illness. The journey was incredible. The team trained hard and felt prepared for the grueling physical and mental beating the race would offer. But nothing could have prepared them for the sudden, unrelenting, and raging storm that sent a 30-foot swell with a 50-knot wind gust that violently capsized their boat. The team raced against all odds to get back to shore, but a damaged raft and failing technological support limited their capacity to fight the current. Fortunately, an atmospheric miracle enabled their mayday signal to reach a giant freighter, which eventually tracked them down and came to their rescue. Narrated by actor William Fichtner, DEFYING DEATH ON THE ATLANTIC is an hour-long documentary that tells their story. It features the four veterans who refused to give up and, despite incredible odds, continued to support each other until they were rescued. They began this journey to encourage other veterans to share their stories in the hope of healing. Now, they have the ultimate story to share.
A NEW LEASH ON LIFE: THE K9s FOR WARRIORS STORY highlights the journeys of three United States veterans struggling to adapt to life back home. All three suffered from PTSD after returning from serving overseas, and each has found hope and new ways to handle their stress and emotional challenges through the aid of a companion dog. Throughout the documentary, Adam, Shilo and Louis recount their years of service and discuss the PTSD symptoms they faced while trying to re-acclimate to civilian life. Like many veterans, they had trouble managing their flashbacks and hypervigilance, among other issues. Each ended up looking into K9s for Warriors for help. K9s for Warriors was founded in 2010 by Shari Duval who, at the time, was desperate to help her son Brett, a veteran suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injury after serving two tours in Iraq. She stumbled upon a story about a service dog that had helped another veteran cope and that inspired her to start a service dog agency for vets. Shari's idea gave her son new purpose. Shari and Brett's organization pairs veterans with certified service canines. All the dogs are trained by Shari and her team and each dog is rescued from a shelter. They work with 10 to 12 veterans a month, and the veterans go through a weeks-long orientation program where they learn training tools and bond with their new companions. Weaving together the story of Shari and her son's work with service dogs and the intimate experiences of three U.S. military members in the aftermath of their service, A NEW LEASH ON LIFE shows a unique way suffering veterans are mitigating symptoms and returning to a more regular life.
Veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Veterinary Medical Association published a joint study in 2019 indicating that veterinarians were more likely to die by suicide compared with the general U.S. population. Female veterinarians were 3.5 times more likely, and male veterinarians were 2.1 times more likely to take their own lives than the average. Multiple stressors play a role, and most of the stress arises from the daily demands of their work, which include euthanizing beloved pets, a ceaseless drive towards perfection, a poor work-life balance, and being cyberbullied and vilified by disgruntled pet owners who feel the doctors don't respond quickly enough to meet their expectations. The collection of pressures they encounter lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and depression among this group of professionals who have dedicated their hearts and lives to caring for vulnerable animals. THE COST OF CARING is an hour-long documentary that explores the challenges veterinarians face and ways to address these obstacles.
