Lynley and Havers investigate the death of paparazzo photographer Peter Rooker, who was found beaten and shot in Soho, London. They discover that he had an appointment the following day with national tabloid editor, Melissa Booth, who tells them not only that he was an old flame but also that he used to be a war photographer, but changed after he went to Bosnia. Was Melissa's husband jealous, or is the key Rookers guardianship of a young Bosnian woman called Nina, who brandishes a gun at DC Nkata and who works at Number 19, the Soho club run by ex-paratrooper Michael Wren where Rooker was seen shortly before he died. The mystery leads them all the way to a massacre in Bosnia in 1995, and brings tragedy for Lynley when Helen gets involved in the investigation.
