Post-WWII, there were at least nine large hardware companies based in this industrial city, and according to the Hartford Courant, employing at least 15,000 people, and paying $75 million in mostly local wages (more than $700 million in today's dollars). Working in tool factories sustained generations of New Britain's families - including the Stanleys, a large and prolific group of innovators who were cousins, and rivals. Today, Stanley Black & Decker is the one hardware company that remains in New Britain - and its history is inextricably intertwined with this small Connecticut town whose motto is "Industry fills the hive and enjoys the honey." Always Looking: Titus Brooks Heagins

Duration: 0:56:46

ALWAYS LOOKING: TITUS BROOKS HEAGINS explores the work of photographer Titus Brooks Heagins and the challenging questions his photos pose about the systemic and casual exclusions and neglect of society's most vulnerable communities of color. Humanizing, reverent, and confrontational, Titus' photographs document the overlooked: people who - usually through some intersection of poverty, race, or gender/sexual identity - exist as outsiders. He describes his work as "confronting viewers in their personal spaces to move the position of 'otherness' closer to a normative construction of self." A large body of Titus' work focuses on trans people, whom he has photographed in the U.S. and Cuba since 2016. As a cis-gendered African American man in his 70s, Titus' relationship with these communities is complex and controversial, a topic the film examines as he draws a connection to his experiences of being bullied, and othered, as a child. Through verite footage following Titus into the field, plus interviews with family, colleagues, and mentees, ALWAYS LOOKING: TITUS BROOKS HEAGINS examines a complex, talented, passionate, and compassionate figure. It also illuminates the fortitude it takes to be an outsider documenting other marginalized people.

While today Armenia is the size of Maryland, it once stretched from the Caspian to the Mediterranean Sea and from Persia to the Caucasus. Armenia is older than Christianity and within its ancient borders lies Mt. Ararat, the final resting place of Noah's ark, and although now lost to Turkey, the 16,000-foot mountain still stands as a symbol of Armenian persistence. The Armenian survival has been forged in the furnaces of war and genocide and their centuries of struggle is an integral part of their national identity, as is their language, religion and cultural heritage. In Part 1, Joseph crisscrosses Armenia to ancient sites where some of the world's oldest artifacts have been discovered. From roadside fruit stands to riverside wine stalls and bustling markets, Joseph is welcomed into local homes to witness traditional artisans at work and join in religious and communal celebrations that inspire, enlighten and reveal the Armenian heart and soul.

The documentary PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR: BEYOND THE MASK explores the life and legacy of the first African American to achieve national fame as a writer. Born to former slaves in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) is best remembered for his poem "We Wear the Mask" and for lines from "Sympathy," which inspired the title of Maya Angelou's famous autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. " Dunbar's story mirrors the African American experience around the turn of the century. Referred to by abolitionist Frederick Douglass as "The most promising young colored man in America," Dunbar also wrote short stories, novels, and widely published essays critical of Jim Crow laws, lynching, and what was commonly called "The Negro Problem." Drawing richly on archival photographs, letters and newspaper articles, PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR: BEYOND THE MASK chronicles the short but remarkable life and career of the influential poet and writer.
