We uncover the story of our relationship with the skies from our earliest ancestors, through to the birth of the science of astronomy. Our story begins with one of the earliest known creation myths - the Babylonian Enuma Elish. With spectacular CGI animation, we see the clash of the gods Marduk and Tiamat that the Babylonians believed gave birth to the earth and the sky. In this episode we visit the caves of El Castillo in Northern Spain. Deep inside the caves we see some of the earliest cave paintings in the world. Astronomer Phil Plait shows us how the skies could be used to navigate and tell the time, either by observing the phases of the moon, or by tracking the movements of the sun across the horizon. We look at Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza and see that, as our earliest civilisations developed, we built monuments that enabled us to observe the skies and worship them. We visit Ancient Greece, where the great storytellers Hesiod and Homer were populating the world with gods and monsters. That is until the first philosophers started to look at the world not in terms of individual events that showed the actions of living gods in the sky, but as phenomena that were all part of the patterns of the natural world. As philosophy and early science start to reshape the world from mythological to rational, we are on the cusp of a revolution that gave birth to modern science.

REDEEMING UNCLE TOM: THE JOSIAH HENSON STORY tells the story of Josiah Henson (voiced by actor Danny Glover), the real-life inspiration for Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic 1852 novel, which has been recognized as one of the sparks that ignited the Civil War. Josiah Henson was born into slavery near Port Tobacco, Maryland around 1789. As a child, he was sold to Isaac Riley, who later appointed him superintendent of the farm at an unusually young age because of Henson's strength and intelligence. Riley entrusted Henson with exceptional responsibilities and permitted him to become a preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church. However, when Henson attempted to buy his freedom, Riley cheated him and made plans to sell him south. Fearing separation from his family, he fled north with his wife and children in the summer of 1830. After escaping through Ohio and New York, they eventually settled in Ontario, Canada.

A global pandemic. A life apart from family and friends. An economy that has spiraled out of control, driving millions out of their homes and leaving far too many hungry. And a future that can only be described as "uncertain." This is the world we find ourselves living in today. Yet, despite these overwhelming challenges, we've picked ourselves up and continued to move forward. We're united by our resilience and our drive to find meaning and purpose in our lives, no matter the obstacles. For a long time, people believed that resilience was a trait that you either have or you don't have, but the latest research suggests quite the opposite. There is no "resilience gene" that helps individuals deal with adversity, but rather, resilience is a learnable skill that is available to all of us. Like building a muscle, building resilience takes time and intentionality, but it has never been more important than now. In this hour-long Lidia Celebrates America, Lidia Bastianich travels from big cities to small pockets of rural America, either in person or virtually, to share the inspiring stories of a diverse group of resilient Americans who have overcome extraordinary odds in their own lives, and found purpose in serving their communities. They understand better than most that all of our futures are interconnected. Now more than ever, we need each other to survive and thrive.
