THE FIVE DEMANDS is a riveting story about the student strike that changed the face of higher education. In April 1969, a small group of Black and Puerto Rican students shut down the City College of New York, an elite public university located in the heart of Harlem. Although the late 1960s are known as an era of student activism, this momentous event has been overlooked and forgotten. Far more attention has been paid to white middle-class students in opposition to the Vietnam War, yet this protest had a more significant impact: the CCNY strikers were the vanguard of a national Black student movement that transformed the culture, mission, and curriculum of American higher education. CCNY's strike was homegrown in Harlem, America's most famous Black neighborhood. The Harlem community rallied around the students, and for many, it was the first time they ever stepped foot on the neo-Gothic campus on a hill overlooking their neighborhood. National television news covered the strike, but within a few years, this heroic struggle for educational equity was swept under the proverbial rug. Fueled by the revolutionary fervor sweeping the nation, the strike turned into an uprising, leading to the extended occupation of the campus, the cancelation of classes, the arrest of students, and the resignation of the college president. Told through the participants' point of view, the film follows the students' struggle against the institutional racism that, for over a century, had shut out people of color from this institution and other public universities. THE FIVE DEMANDS proves that a handful of ordinary citizens can band together to take action and effect meaningful change.

A personal journey along one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world featuring the wildlife and wild places that make it so special. Emmy award winning wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson takes viewers on an authored odyssey along Ireland's rugged Atlantic coast - the place he chooses to make his home after 30 years spent shooting some of the world's most celebrated wildlife films. The series will follow Colin from the southwest corner of the island to finish on the tip of Northern Ireland. Along the way, he gives intimate personal insights into the wild animals and wild places he discovers. We begin on Skellig Rocks - stormbound ocean pinnacles off the southwestern corner where early Christian monks built a monastery on the summit almost 1500 years ago. His next stop is the deserted Great Blasket Island, home to a wildlife spectacle more familiar from Antarctica - vast numbers of Seals coming ashore in winter to fight, mate and moult before he heads inland in search of the island's last surviving herd of Red Deer from prehistoric times. Back on the coast he goes on the trail of Humpback Whales which are making their mark in Irish waters returning year after year in increasing numbers before heading north along the coast to meet a lonely dolphin who has set up residence off Ireland's striking Burren region. Colin ends in Clew Bay, an iconic inlet half way up Ireland's west coast and the place Colin chose to make his home after decades traveling the world.

This episode features a conversation with cultural leaders and community stakeholders, including, Aaron Leggett, the Chief of the Denaina Eklutna Athabascan people, and the Special Exhibit Curator at the Anchorage Museum. The subject of these conversation is about the Indigenous Place Names Movement, and an event that was taking place on this particular day of unveiling the first place marker reclaiming the Denaina Eklutna Athabaskan original place name of Chanstnu, which for many years prior had been called Westchester Lagoon. A goal of Aaron and others behind this movement is to carry out the rest of this project's vision by reclaiming the original indigenous place names and denoting them with place markers all over the city of anchorage. There are also plans for a digital, oral history walking tour that people can use to explore anchorage and understand its indigenous history. The hope is that the take away is why indigenous place renaming is important, and how it helps community members define their cultural identities today by strengthening their resolve to chart their path forward as an individual connected to their heritage. A goal for the Indigenous Place Names project is for it to be used as a model for other places around the state of Alaska and other places that have strong indigenous ties. It's a model for indigenous place renaming that is sustainable and meant to last. https://anchorageparkfoundation. org/current-projects/indigenous-placemaking/ Thank you for watching this episode of Culture Stories.
