(East/interaction with object) Character- "He is mean" (West/individual) versus "He had a bad day"( East/effect of others)
Perspective of self and others is explored. The West is more ego-centric and individualistic, seeing from the observers point of view. The East tends to be retrospective, considering what others think. For example, in the West you would give lots of drink choices, allowing individual choice. In the East it is polite to consider the persons favorite drink and offer that. This perspective leads the West to value the self whereas the East places importance on the group.

But an increasingly common climatic anomaly occuring far out to sea is killing life. It's El Ni?o. Scientists believe that climate change could cause the frequency and severity of this climatic phenomenon to double threatening native species that are unique in the world. In French Polynesia, biologists are studying corals and working to predict the impact of climate change on the future of our oceans and on global food security.

Each segment features one poet speaking about their lives and work, and sharing several of their poems on camera. Brandy Nalani McDougall, is of Kanaka Maoli (Hawai'i, Maui, O'ahu and Kaua'i lineages), Chinese and Scottish descent. She is the author of a poetry collection, The Salt-Wind, Ka Makani Pa'akai (2008) and a chapbook, "Return to the Kula House," featured in Effigies: An Anthology of New Indigenous Writing, edited by Allison Hedge Coke (2009). She is a co-founder of Ala Press and Kahuaom'noa Press.

She left the island to pursue her education, receiving her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1977 and an M.A. in creative writing from Boston University in 1981. She returned to Hawai'i after graduating. In 1983, Song published her first collection of poetry, Picture Bride, which won the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, a very prestigious national poetry award.
